The TP-32 entered service in 1952 as a lightweight weapon for precision anti-submarine warfare. It trades range and speed for a passive-homing sonar seeker, making it especially useful for helicopters and other aircraft that can be rearmed both on land and at sea.
Its ability to turn around and reacquire a target after an initial miss significantly increases its kill probability, but also introduces a dangerous risk of friendly-fire incidents.
This unusual behavior earned it the nickname “Turndevil.”
