Commissioned in 1964 as response to increasing submarine activity around the Eastmayer archipelago, the HC1025 Seaduck was designed as a compact and affordable platform capable of operating from small frigates, coastal patrol ships, and improvised island airstrips. Its defining feature was a retractable dipping sonar, allowing the helicopter to hover low over the surface and actively hunt submarines in shallow waters.
Although its unusual hull shape and bulky nose gave it a somewhat comical appearance, crews quickly learned to appreciate its reliability and advanced avionics for the era. The Seaduck also proved useful in secondary roles such as light surface attack and maritime patrol.
