The MR22 entered service in 1960 as Eastmayer’s first radar-guided air-to-air missile. Its relatively low weight allowed it to be carried not only by frontline fighter aircraft, but even by light helicopters and smaller fixed-wing platforms.
A key innovation of the MR22 was its compact active radar seeker, which provided reliable target acquisition and even enabled limited secondary use against large ground or surface targets.
Its primary drawback was a short motor burn time, resulting in a limited flight duration and restricting its effective engagement range.
This combination of precision guidance and close-range striking power earned the missile its enduring nickname: “Shortbow.”
