Fort Mercer; A History
SS Fort Mercer was a T2-SE-A1 tanker built by Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. in Chester, Pennsylvania, and launched on October 2, 1945. With World War II ending in August 1945, the ship never saw wartime service. It was owned and operated by the Trinidad Corporation of New York. On February 18, 1952, while carrying kerosene and fuel oil, Fort Mercer was caught in a severe gale 30 miles east of Chatham, Massachusetts. Battling 68-foot waves, the ship cracked and eventually broke in two. Nine crew members remained on the bow, while 34 were on the stern, which retained power and radio contact.
The U.S. Coast Guard dispatched vessels Eastwind and Unimak from near Nantucket, along with Yakutat and Acushnet, which rescued four men from the bow. Tragically, five crewmen perished as the bow sank. The stern, still afloat, was towed to Newport, Rhode Island, fitted with a new bow, and rechristened San Jacinto. It was later rebuilt again in 1964 as Pasadena, which was partially scrapped in 1983. - In the same storm, T2 tanker SS Pendleton also broke apart 20 miles away. A daring Coast Guard rescue saved 32 of the 33 men from its stern.
