Pendleton - T2-SE-A1 Oil Tanker

T2-SE-A1 Tanker Pendleton - 1:1 Scale - 523ft long - Near full interior!

Pendleton ; A History

Constructed in 1944 at the Kaiser Swan Island Yards in Portland, Oregon, the Pendleton was a T2-SE-A1 class oil tanker built for the U.S. Merchant Marine during World War II. Designed for rapid mass production, T2 tankers were notorious for weak steel and rushed welding, making them prone to structural failures. After serving in WWII, Pendleton was sold to National Bulk Feighters in 1948 and began a short-lived commercial career marked by minor incidents until her fateful final voyage in 1952. --

In February 1952, while en route from Louisiana to Boston, Pendleton was caught in a brutal Nor’easter off the coast of New England. Battling 70-foot waves, the ship fractured amidships and split in two. The bow section, including Captain John Fitzgerald and his crew, vanished, while the stern remained afloat under the command of Chief Engineer Ray Sybert. Trapped and drifting without communication, the remaining crew faced certain death as the Coast Guard’s resources were focused on rescuing another stricken tanker, the Fort Mercer. --

In a heroic effort, Coast Guard officer Bernie Webber and his crew launched a daring rescue aboard the small 36-foot lifeboat CG-36500. Battling towering waves and without a functioning compass, they reached the stranded crew of the Pendleton’s stern. Defying all odds, they rescued 32 of the 33 crewmen. --

The Pendleton’s bow was eventually salvaged and scrapped in 1953, while the stern sank near Monomoy Island, becoming a target for looters before being demolished by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1979.
