HISTORY / LORE
Laid down sometime in either 1897 or 1898, the Vurian could be called a cheaper version of the SS Vermont, with her enclosed bridge being replaced by an open bridge, as well as the removal of her forecastle and aftcastle. The Vurian was completed in 1898 and remained in service until 1912, when she met her end. On April 18, 1912, the Vurian with a load of coal from North Sawer bound for a port in Meier, set out into a building storm. Sometime in the night on the 19th of April, whilst the ship had just rounded the East Sawer shore and was still battling the maelstrom, her cargo hatches failed. Water poured into her holds, and she capsized. All 6 crewmen who were readying to abandon ship when the capsizing occurred were thrown into the water. Out of the 6 men, only 1, a 23-year-old deckhand, James M McCarly, survived. He clung to the Vurian's capsized lifeboat for 3 days until he was finally rescued by a schooner that had been sent to search for survivors or bodies from the presumably stricken Vurian. James lived till 79, dying in 1967.
