During the 1950s, the need arose for a new purpose-built fleet support ship. This vessel was intended not only to carry fuel and equipment for extended fleet operations, but also to operate independently as an anti-piracy escort within merchant convoys.
The new fleet tender FT560 entered service in 1962. Alongside its generous fuel and equipment storage, it featured respectable self-defense capabilities, countermeasures, and enough speed to keep up with fleet movements. A small helipad further expanded its ability to conduct self-sustained operations.
Frequently undertaking long voyages of fleet resupply, convoy escort, and logistics transport, it soon earned the nickname “Nomad.”
