ilo Momisi

ilo Momisi (the tool "Momiji") is a canoe with two settee-rigged sails.

She is very weatherly and fast in a reach, but the rig does not lend itself to running fast downwind.

Rig

The mainsail and mizzen are settee-rigged. The settee sail is a modification of the lateen sail which allows for a shorter yard for the same size sail.

Dealing with the bad tack

If the yard and sail are touching the mast, you are sailing on the bad tack.

Lowering the yard and pushing it over the mast to get it on the other tack may not be a great idea while beating to windward, so it may be desirable to simply sail on the bad tack anyway.
