Built in 1854, the Joseph C. Morrison was a steamship chartered by the Ontario, Simcoe, and Huron railway company starting in the summer of 1855. The ship was the largest and fastest of its kind on that route at the time, and the ship became wildly successful despite its imperfect construction and constant mishaps.
On August 5, 1857, the ship caught fire in the boiler room and sank in little over an hour and a half. No lives were lost, but almost nothing was saved from its cargo or passengers' belongings.
