2017 LRASM - AGM-158C - Middle East
AGM-194 HCSM
Hybrid-Seeker Cruise Strike Missile
Long-range. Autonomous. Designed for precision engagement of moving targets.
DESCRIPTION
The AGM-194 HCSM is a long-range, standoff cruise missile optimized for anti-ship warfare, with secondary capability against ground and aerial targets.
The system integrates GNSS midcourse navigation with onboard radar terminal acquisition, allowing effective engagement using only approximate target coordinates.
Unlike conventional GPS-guided weapons, the HCSM can autonomously search, identify, and track targets within its terminal engagement zone.
Designed for single-target elimination, it prioritizes precision, autonomy, and realistic engagement constraints over saturation tactics.
GUIDANCE TYPES & DESCRIPTIONS
GNSS
Provides midcourse navigation to a designated coordinate. Only approximate targeting data is required.
RDar-TWS
Primary terminal guidance system using onboard PESA radar.
- Range: ~60 km
- Scan Volume: ±15° horizontal / ±8° vertical
- Track-While-Scan enables simultaneous search and tracking
DTR (Dynamic Target Reassignment)
Replaces the original waypoint with a live tracked target, enabling continuous course correction.
IOG
Guides the missile toward the last known target position if lock is lost.
CRUISE MISSILE ARCHITECTURE
The HCSM utilizes a boost + glide flight profile:
- Rocket-assisted launch phase
- Transition to extended glide cruise
- Maintains altitude and range without sustained propulsion
This enables:
- Extreme standoff engagement (~500 km)
- Efficient long-duration flight
- Stable cruise performance
FEATURES
- Hybrid GNSS + radar guidance system
- Autonomous target acquisition within radar envelope
- Track-While-Scan targeting logic
- Effective against moving targets
- Folding wing deployment after launch
- Multi-script Lua flight control system
- True fire-and-forget operation
PERFORMANCE
- Cruise Speed: ~500 mph (≈ 223 m/s)
- Effective Range: ~500 km
- Cruise Altitude: ~700 m
- Radar Range: ~60 km
- Guidance System: 8 Lua scripts
WARHEAD
- Type: Multi-charge high explosive
- Configuration: ~8 sub-charges
- Fuze: Impact (armed pre-contact)
- Effect: High lethality vs large vessels
OPERATING LIMITATIONS
- No post-launch guidance updates
- No full target reacquisition after lock loss
- Radar limited to forward scan cone
- Not intended for close-range or swarm use
EMPLOYMENT NOTES
- Input approximate target coordinates
- Align missile toward expected target sector before launch
- Best used against moving ships in known operating areas
- Performance depends on launch conditions and trajectory
ROLE & EFFECTIVENESS
- Large ships and naval targets
- Moving maritime targets
- Static ground targets (within radar envelope)
- Limited capability vs airborne targets
