This type of ferry is a "single-headed ferry" that allows vehicles to enter and exit only from the front of the ferry. It was relatively inexpensive to build, and had the advantage of being able to handle cargo if there was a floating pier
The second generation basic from, which is on the verge of extinction. it's characteristics are as follows:
- A wide vehicle deck that stretches all the way to the stern
- An upper passenger compartment covering about 2/3 of the vehicle deck
- A wide bridge that stretches to the full width of the ship, located as the same level as the passenger cabins or half a level higher
The term "Geiyo-Class" generally refers to the 199GT/ class single-headed ferries that were built with minor changes from the early 1970s to around 1990s. As mentioned earlier, the prototype of the single -headed ferry actually dates back to to the Ships built in the 1960s, and the "Geiyo-class| in the narrow sense is an expansion of this prototype (first generation).
Currently, a third-generation ship type equivalent to the next generation has been developed to comply with barrier-free standards, and new construction of this ship was discontinued in 1996.
The remaining existing ships are all aging either being sold to other neighboring countries like Philippines, with the oldest being retired first, and before long the category itself will thing of the past
