S.S. Bremerhaven Wreck Stern Section

SS Bremerhaven is a fictional ship. This is the shipwrecked version's stern section.

History

The SS Bremerhaven was ordered along with her two sister ships by Bremen-Niederlande line from Blohm und Voß in 1913. She was launched in early 1914, not long after her sisters SS Nordenham and SS Wilhelmshaven. She sailed from Bremen to Bremerhaven to Wilhelmshaven to Amsterdam and Back until the end of the year.
The First World War broke out on the 28th of July 1914, and in December the Bremerhaven was converted into a floating barracks alongside her sisters for use by the Imperial German Army.
All three ships survived the war, and were re-fitted with better propulsion and put back in service soon after. In 1923 the SS Nordenham sank, and in 1927 the remaining ships were refitted. The Bremerhaven’s cabin class spaces were expanded into a crew hallway on the same deck. In 1928 both ships were mothballed due to low profits, and the company went bankrupt. The sisters were purchased by Hamburg-Amerika line shortly after, and were put back in service in 1936. On the 1st of September 1939, Germany invaded Poland, and on the 3rd the United Kingdom and most of her allies declared war, followed by South Africa on the 6th and Canada on the 10th (South Africa had a disagreement, and Canada wanted to show she was independent). The two ships were quickly converted for troop carrying, and in April of 1940 they transported Wehrmacht troops in the invasion of Norway. After just a few weeks in this role, both vessels set sail to return to Bremen. The SS Wilhelmshaven sank on this voyage, leaving the Bremerhaven as the only remaining ship in the class. She was converted into a floating barracks in late 1940. During the RAF bombing raid on the 4th of July 1941, multiple bombs dropped by a Bristol Blenheim struck her aft superstructure and detonated deep in the hull. She listed to port and sank by the stern in only a short time, leaving many trapped inside. She miraculously did not break her back, despite the damage to her structure. Less than a month later, she was refloated, gutted, and converted into a vehicle ferry, used for transporting a Tiger tank along with some personnel. In early 1943, she was sailing en route to the Mediterranean with a tank and about fifty souls on board. Around noon she was struck on the starboard stern by a Mark XII torpedo dropped by a Vickers Wellington in the English channel. She sank by the starboard stern in under five minutes in moderate waves, with a loss of all on board. Her wreck wasn’t discovered until 1993
