S.S. Winslow Car Ferry

S.S. Winslow was a north cape lines car ferry that serviced the nearby communities of sawyer by transporting cars and even on occasions, railway wagons and engines. Her career was rather short lived; only a few years into service, Winslow set sail but became caught in a terrible storm. Her back hatch became smashed in, and her boilers were worked to their limits. Within the blink of an eye, her port boiler exploded, tearing an awful gash into her side, followed not much later by her starboard boiler. Winslow was left adrift and sinking quickly. Luckily, she was not too far from shore, but due to the severity of the storm, Winslow had been left to her own devices. Her bow constantly pitched and dived into the sea floor, with her stern constantly raising up and down, before finally settling for good. All that remained above water were her masts and the tips of her funnels, which were on the verge of collapsing from the deck. Her passengers and crew were only able to successfully launch two boats, while the others either overturned or were not able to be launched. Over the following days, her survivors were picked up by the sawyer coastguard.
