You and your friends were convicted of a crime you didn't commit. During transport, the ship you were on was attacked by slavers. After several months as a slave your group managed to escape. But the ship you escaped on was quickly tracked and a battle ensued. You managed to fend them off but not before taking catastrophic damage. You had no choice but to use the escape pods. You and your group of friends have nothing but your wits, your knowledge, and whatever fell off the spaceship when it crashed.
