Tired of automatic weapons in CE chewing through meters of stone in an afternoon? Tired of finishing carving your mountain base by the end of week 1? Tired of colonists throwing tantrums and chewing through your walls? This mod is for you.
It ups the HP for non-biological materials (not wood, leather, cloth) by 10x. It also makes *every* mined raw stone drop a chunk. Chunks yield 5 instead of 20 stone blocks, so the average yield per section of mountain mined is the same, but the total work required to mine is about 14x (10x for the mining time, plus 4x the stone block making time, plus the extra hauling time). It also makes mountain base mining a bit of a logistical challenge: you need to figure out where you're going to put all the chunks while waiting on them to get turned into blocks.
Additionally, construction times for non-biological non-metallic things are increased 10x. Building a stole brick wall takes a lot of time. Stone doors even more time. This makes (pla)steel a viable choice for walls, as it builds fast and is hard to destroy. It's just a bit on the expensive side. A good middle ground is to toss up an outer wall out of steel, then build stone as a second layer, then take the steel down when you run low on steel.
All in all, this makes digging a mountain base feel more like the epic undertaking it should be, while rewarding you for the undertaking by making your stone edifices actually able to withstand the insane firepower that is CE. Don't expect your walls to soak multiple doomsday rockets (in fact, a good rocket salvo can still make a 1x1 hole through your wall often enough), but they don't remove whole sections of walls anymore.
# As of 1.3, mining speed also depends on light levels. No more mining at full speed in the dark!
