THE STORY BEHIND IT
------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- ------- -------
Day 14 of the Knox Event.
Claire Mercer had been a trauma nurse at Muldraugh Medical Center for
eleven years. She had seen car crashes, stabbings, overdoses. She had
held the hands of people who were dying and told them they weren't alone.
She was not prepared for this.
The camp's rule was simple: if you get bitten, you get a bullet.
No waiting. No hoping. One bite, one outcome.
But Claire had seen something the others hadn't.
She had seen a man named Roy take a full scratch across the forearm
from a walker's fingernail on Day 6. They quarantined him in the back
of a hardware store and waited for him to turn.
He never did.
She had also seen a woman named Sandra... barely touched, just a graze
go feverish by evening and start screaming by midnight.
The bite didn't decide it. Something else did.
And if something else decided it... maybe you could find out which way
it was going to go. Maybe you could know.
Claire started with what the hospital storage room had left behind:
bleach, gauze, saline, glucose packets. She remembered a paper she'd
half-read years ago about viral protein denaturation in hypochlorite
solutions. She didn't remember the details. She improvised.
The idea was crude: sodium hypochlorite reacts differently when exposed
to Knox-infected tissue proteins. The sugar stabilized the solution and
helped it bond to absorbent cloth. You hold it under your tongue for
about sixty seconds, long enough for the strip to absorb trace markers
from saliva and mucosal tissue.
Clean strip. Clean blood.
Marked strip. Marked fate.
She tested it on herself first. Negative.
She tested it on a man who'd been bitten that morning and was already
running a fever. Positive. He was gone by sundown.
She called it the ZomboTester. The name was a joke at first.
Then people started asking for them, and it stopped being funny.
Because in a world where not knowing is the worst thing of all
even bad news is better than no news.
