Newark was built to work as a collier for the Sawyer Merchant and Marine Company LTD. Her owners would lease her for refueling duties for any vessel in need of coal. Every once in a while, Newark would even be rented for use with the navy to refuel their vessels on long-distance voyages. Newark was deemed as a Jinxed ship due to her constant accidents; her most notorious one being the time she accidentally rammed and sunk the North Cape Line's Arcturus at night in the fog. Eventually, war ensued and Newark was torpedoed and sunk by an enemy sub while transporting Manganese ore.
