In the beginning, there were 3 railways. One of those railways was a mining railway which took the spoils from the Dean Hall Mine to the towns of North Harbor and ONeill, with the others being a light railway ran by box tanks, and an up and coming railway ran by a rear tank.
Bernard, named after both the chief of the company who build them, and the chairman of the Dean Hall Mining Company, was the first engine on the SNR after it was merged from the DHMC into the SNR. Originally, Bernard was built to run the line from North Harbor to the mine and hall minerals back to replace the horses who worked the line before. Which was done effortlessly by Bernard. But I doubt the horses were happy.
Bernard is the oldest surviving steam engine on the island of Sawyer, being built and 1868, two years before the SNR.
