Civilized Nation

Build a civilization. Watch it grow.

Civilized Nation gives your faction a presence on the global stage. Settle the world, appoint governors, conquer enemies, and advance through technological eras — all within vanilla systems with no bloated or unbalanced 4X layer on top.

Your faction, alive in the world

In vanilla RimWorld your faction exists only where your colonists stand. Civilized Nation changes that.
Settle a map, build it up, then hand it off to an autonomous governor. That settlement becomes part of your faction's territory — visible on the world map, governed independently, and growing alongside your civilization. Conquer an enemy settlement and instead of watching it vanish, convert it into another governed outpost flying your banner.
How it works:

  • Build a settlement to a minimum infrastructure threshold
  • Use the Abandon to Governor button on the settlement gizmo bar
  • Ensure your colonists have somewhere else to go before handing over control
  • The settlement transitions to autonomous governance under your faction
  • Conquered enemy settlements present a Capture or Raze choice — capture converts them to your faction after a reconstruction period while raze maintains vanilla behavior.

Progress through the ages

Research drives era advancement. Complete key research milestones and your faction transitions through the four technological eras:
Tribal → Medieval → Industrial → Spacer
Your faction's governed settlements, pawn equipment, and world presence all reflect your current era. The transition isn't instant — it takes time for innovation to spread across your territory, with duration scaling based on the size and geographic spread of your holdings.
Your flavor also matters. Are you a civil society, a rough frontier culture, or a pirate nation? Your faction's disposition shapes how your faction appears on the world stage.

A world that progresses with you

AI factions don't stand still either. Given enough time, rival factions will research their way into new eras, fielding more advanced pawns and equipment as the game matures. Era progression for AI can be tuned or disabled entirely in mod settings.

Lightweight and compatible by design

Civilized Nation works within RimWorld's existing faction and world systems rather than replacing them. It introduces no new maps, no new UI screens, and no mandatory mechanics — everything is opt-in or adjustable.
Supported mods (not required):

  • Vanilla Factions Expanded — additional era-appropriate faction templates
  • Faction Territories and Vassalage — compatible via opt-out setting
  • World Domination — compatible via opt-out setting

Bonus content:

  • Vanilla-style medieval and spacer era factions included
  • Neanderthal and pigmen era factions with Biotech DLC
  • Full mod settings for tuning transition speed, reconstruction time, AI progress rate, and more
  • XML-based patching system for mod authors — see the compatibility thread or the link below
