Most generate naturally, while others are meant to be used with a mod like Prepare Carefully or Character Edit. The backstories that generate naturally are designed to fit into the emotional framework established by Rimworld, and blend in with vanilla backstories as best possible. The backstories made for for manually-made pawns(i.e. not meant to spawn naturally) drop any and all pretense of subtlety.
