SMS Dresden was a German light cruiser built at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg and launched in 1907. Operating in the Atlantic and Caribbean at the start of World War I, she joined Admiral von Spee’s squadron and became its only survivor after the Battle of the Falkland Islands, escaping due to her superior speed. Continuing alone as a commerce raider, she captured or sank several merchant ships while attempting to evade British pursuit. Her career ended in March 1915 when she was cornered by British warships in Chilean waters and scuttled at Cumberland Bay to avoid capture. More details below.

History
SMS Dresden was a light cruiser of the Imperial German Navy and the lead ship of the Dresden class, a group of small cruisers built in the years before the First World War. She was laid down at the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg in 1906 and launched on 5 October 1907. Commissioned in 1908, Dresden represented a transitional stage in German cruiser design, being among the first of her type to use Parsons steam turbines for propulsion, which gave her a notably high top speed and made her one of the fastest ships in the German fleet. Intended for long‑range overseas service, she undertook early voyages to the Americas and participated in fleet exercises and diplomatic missions before the war.
At the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914, Dresden was operating in the Caribbean after a deployment off the coast of Mexico. Receiving orders to commence commerce raiding, she evaded British forces and made her way south to join Vice Admiral Maximilian von Spee’s East Asia Squadron. Dresden took part in the squadron’s operations in the Pacific and fought in the Battle of Coronel on 1 November 1914, where the German force achieved a significant victory over a British cruiser squadron. When the squadron was destroyed at the Battle of the Falkland Islands on 8 December 1914, Dresden was the only German ship to escape, using her superior speed to avoid destruction.
Following her escape, Dresden continued operating as a lone raider in the South Atlantic and later in the Pacific, capturing or sinking several merchant vessels while attempting to secure coal supplies. By early 1915, however, mechanical wear and dwindling fuel forced her to seek refuge in Chilean waters. On 14 March 1915, British warships located her at Cumberland Bay near the island of Más a Tierra (now Robinson Crusoe Island). After a brief engagement, her commanding officer ordered the ship to be scuttled to prevent capture. The crew was interned by Chilean authorities.
Despite her comparatively short wartime career, SMS Dresden became known for her speed, endurance, and her dramatic escape after the Falklands. Her service history reflects both the strategic challenges and the daring operations of German light cruisers during the early months of the First World War.
