Perhaps you, like me installed Vanilla Cooking Expanded and were introduced to salt. Salt preserves, it flavours, it carries nations and has done so for thousands of years. Currently if you want salt you have to mine it or grind rock chunks to get it but in the real world the safest and easiest way to get salt is to evaporate sea water, a feature we have lacked until now.
After installing this fine mod you will find an evaporation pond in your misc menu. The pond doesn't need research, it doesn't need construction skills or even materials of any kind. It only needs ocean water and time. Every four to five days you will find 20 salt spawning from your ponds, which averages 4-5 salt per day, per pond. These figures can easily be changed in the xml if you'd prefer.
Now to preempt some comments:
"The salt appeared during the night after a solar eclipse are these some kind of magic ponds?"
Yes.
"I built a pond on sea ice but the pond still looks like it's made of sand"
Beneath the ice you will eventually find sand.
"Why do these need to be on the water and not further up the beach?"
Having them exclusively along the shore prevents the player from covering the entire beach with them, no salt baron for you.
"I want to use my space age sunlamps for faster salt extraction."
There's already a high tech option, it starts with a deep drill and ends with Mega Spiders.
