At present if your colonists need a drink all their water must come from rivers and aquifers but for modern industrial nations that's no longer necessary. As long as you plant your base down next to the ocean you'll have an infinite source of water at your fingertips.
In terms of water generation this is better than a deep well providing a little more than what a nuclear power plant now requires, assuming you're also using my alternative power mod. That's right I invented a problem so I could introduce a solution.

To make one of these work first build it on the coast, then connect it to a water tower, no pumps necessary they're built in.
Also included is a patch for expanded materials metals.
This was a finicky mod to make happen so if you discover any bugs don't be afraid to share.
The water generated by a well caps at about 150 L/ph assuming complete coverage.
A deep well with perfect coverage caps at about 400L/ph.
This Desalination plant has a constant rate of about 625L/ph.
Credit for coding as usual goes to Taranchuk and the art for this one was done by SirLalaPyon.
If you'd prefer to get the salt without the water consider my evaporation pond:

This concludes my three part mod series to make the ocean overpowered.
