BetterTeller

BetterTeller is a RimWorld mod that uses multiple AI systems to drive a custom storyteller. It selects and schedules incidents through a director-style pipeline, blending long-term pacing with moment-to-moment variety. The goal is a story that feels coherent and intentional without becoming predictable. What it does - Chooses macro modes and micro incidents with safety rules, cooldown awareness, and clear guardrails - Adapts pacing over time based on colony state and recent outcomes - Keeps variety high while avoiding repetitive or unsafe spikes - Offers optional learning that updates internal stats as the game progresses How the storyteller thinks BetterTeller separates its decision process into distinct AI roles, each focused on a specific job: - Brain: a contextual bandit using Thompson Sampling to explore and learn which choices work best in similar situations - Director: a belief state plus homeostatic pacing and action masking to keep the narrative stable and safe - Executor: a hierarchical utility AI that scores macro and micro candidates and uses Top-K selection for variety Why it feels different - It aims to create a smooth arc instead of random swings - It can shift pressure without losing track of fairness - It avoids obvious repeats while still respecting RimWorld rules and cooldowns Tools for testing and tuning - Debug overlay with live pool sizes, scoring hints, and profiling context - Telemetry buffer with recent decisions you can dump to CSV or JSON - Simulation mode to test selection logic without firing incidents Plug-and-play Enable the storyteller and play as usual. If you like to tweak or study the system, the mod exposes settings and diagnostic tools so you can tune it to your taste. /// Discord: https://discord.gg/vN5zm29p
