"But one of them caught our eye. The one in the center. He would neither go towards the feeding grounds at the edge of the ice nor return to the colony. Shortly afterwards, we saw him heading straight towards the mountains. Some 70km away."
The Rarest Trait
With a weight of only 1, the Nihilist penguin is the rarest animal trait in the entire system. Finding him is almost like a quest of its own, and it's more of an easter egg.
You can tweak the trait weight to something like 20 or 30 if really you want to find him a bit more easily (penguins are already very rare). With weight 1, expect 1 in every 600 penguins to be a Nihilist.
This mod is mostly to demonstrate how to create a species-specific, flavor trait using the Animal Traits System framework. It contains a simple Def XML file with a few of my annotations. ATS is fully compatible with modded animals.
The Nihilist Penguin:
"Neither go towards the feeding grounds nor return to the colony..."
-70% Trainability.
+35% Wildness.
"Straight towards the mountains..."
+30% Moving Capacity.
+25% Consciousness.
+20% Metabolism.
+15% Blood Pumping.
+35% Dodge Chance.
-50% Incoming Damage.
+40% Injury Healing.
-25% Hunger Rate.
+35% Pain Shock Threshold.
Yes, these stats are exceptional. But finding one is rarer than finding an Alpha animal or an 'Ancient One' Thrumbo in core ATS. The reward is just having the slightest chance to find him. When you finally find him, hours into your save, well, I suppose the trait needs to be special. May it inspire you as it inspired me.
This penguin... I loved the documentary, when I watched it years ago, and I made this mod because of the memes that are showing up. It can hardly be tamed. You can tame/capture it, heal it, feed it, but it will yearn to return to the mountains. Always the mountains.
A Tribute to Werner Herzog
This trait is a homage to one of the most haunting moments in documentary filmmaking, from "Encounters at the End of the World," where Herzog and his crew witnessed a penguin break from its colony and walk alone towards certain death in the Antarctic interior.
"Dr. Anslie explained that even if he caught him and brought him back to the colony, he would immediately head right back for the mountains.
