A product of the 1920 shipbuilding plan, the K-class destroyers featured a similar design to the accompanying J and L-class destroyers. Unusually, the K-class featured a 7-inch cannon as its main armament amidships, although most ships of the class had them removed during refits. The Karl Johnson was laid down in 1923 at Southend dockyards and launched later that year. Until March of 1938, the Karl Johnson had an uneventful service life, mainly patrolling around Skralagia’s southern reaches. That all changed on March 12th, when all available ships were sent to counterattack on Atocha island. The Karl Johnson began bombarding shore positions on April 3rd, one day before the landing themselves. On the 4th, the Karl Johnson supported troops moving inland, destroying the trenches in their way. On May 1st, however, the fleet was forced to retreat after supply lines were effectively severed for two weeks. Come July, the Karl Johnson was hunting a convoy east of the Sawyer Islands, until a rouge 4in shell from the SFS Tempest struck the Karl’s depth charge rack, detonating them, setting the batteries below alight, and jamming the steering gear. Despite the efforts of nearby crews, the ship sank after 30 minutes of struggle.
The wreck was never found.
