Tiakina | WHB Pilot launch
Tiakina was built in 1953 by Blackmore & Sons, in the United Kingdom, but upon arriving after her delivery voyage, it became evident that a large quantity of poorly seasoned and immature timer had been used in the ships construction, and she was withdrawn on May 1st, 1956 for urgent repairs, but it would be 2 more years before these issues were fully solved.
On April 10 1968, she is one of the first 2 ships to respond to Wahines distress call, but she had to shelter in Worser bay until 12 PM, when the Master of the ship, John Brown, was able to manouver her alongside Wahine so Captain Galloway could board Wahine to assist Captain Robertson (the captain of wahine) on her bridge.
Tiakina retired in 1993, and was later used for fishing, and is currently a luxury charter boat based in Dunedin
