GV Matai was commissioned by the New Zealand Marine Department in 1930 as a multi-purpose vessel, primarily as a Lighthouse tender, and cable layer, she would also act as the Yacht for the Governor General of New Zealand, transporting them to where they were needed. She would be ordered directly by the NZ Maritime Department. She would launch on the 11th of the June 1930, fitting out and completing in July as the GV (Government Vessel) Matai. She would be transferred to the RNZN in 1941 for conversion to a minesweeper, where she would gain M/S gear, Depth Charges, a 4-inch gun, and eventually 20mm Cannons. She would deploy to the Solomon campaign, and would eventually be decommissioned in 1945. She would be sold to a commercial user, who turned her into a ferry post war. She would be broken up in 1965.
