HISTORY / LORE
The SS Herstmonceux Castle was an ocean-going tramp steamer built in 1907 originally under the name “Arundel.” In 1928, she was sold and renamed “Herstmonceux,” and in 1937, she was sold to her final owners, the Welland Line, and renamed “Herstmonceux Castle.” She was going on 37 years of service when, on November 17, 1944, she left Buenos Aires for Colchester with a load of fertilizer and empty fuel barrels. She was last reported approximately 900 nautical miles off Argentina, and after that, she was never seen or heard of again. She was officially presumed lost 5 weeks after her last radio transmission, in which everything was supposedly going well. The most accepted theory is that she was sunk by enemy attack and sank before an SOS could be sent, likely during a storm that she was passing through, if it was not the storm itself.
