Trabi-61 – The New People’s Car (1961)
Following the Great Depression of 1957, which devastated the country after the end of the second world war, the National Republic of Borneo—a fascist state with an industrialist and nationalist ideology—began its reconstruction under the motto “Order, Steel, Fatherland.”
In 1961, the Trabi-61 appeared, a compact, cheap and reliable car designed by the state to power the new fascist citizen. Produced in the centralized factories of Dusambara, the Trabi was made with local materials and a simple 2-stroke engine, capable of withstanding the extreme continental climate.
Its design was square and functional, with few curves and many straight lines, reflecting the rigid and disciplined aesthetic of the regime. The steering wheel bore the coat of arms of the Borneo eagle.
A symbol of reconstruction and state surveillance, the Trabi became ubiquitous on party-controlled roads — and was common to see in the hands of both loyal workers and civil militia agents.
