Grumman FF-1 Fifi WW2 Carrier-Fighter Biplane

The Grumman FF (Fifi), was a groundbreaking American naval biplane fighter introduced in the early 1930s and notable for being the first U.S. Navy carrier-based aircraft with retractable landing gear. Designed as a two-seat fighter, it featured a powerful radial engine, a forward-firing machine gun for the pilot, and a rear cockpit operated by a second crew member who also handled radio communications. Despite its biplane layout, the FF offered impressive performance for its time, with speeds exceeding 200 mph, making it faster and more agile than many of its contemporaries. Its innovative design marked a major step forward in naval aviation and laid the foundation for Grumman’s future dominance in U.S. Navy fighter development. Though quickly outpaced by advancing monoplane designs, the Grumman FF remains a landmark aircraft in military aviation history.
