In the spring of 1980, at a modest shipyard in Kure, a sleek new ferry was launched. Designed with a hull of proud steel and a spirit meant for service, she was christened Ferry Matsu. Her purpose was simple, yet noble: to ferry people, dreams, and stories between the mainland of Honshu and the sacred island of Itsukushima—known to the world as Miyajima.
Painted in olive green with red stripes that shimmered under the sun, Ferry Matsu stood apart. Locals instantly took to her warm hum, her gentle sway, and her unwavering reliability. Children would press their faces to the glass as she approached, and elders would smile, knowing they were in good hands.
Back in 2009, The Company Miyajima Ferries had a drastic livery changes to its ferries, turning their old olive green to light blue. Ferry Matsu had a name change and that's where she got her iconic name "Precious" as locals saw her very deemed precious because of her compact sized and speedy design.
For over four decades, Precious Ferry was not just another vessel on the route—she was the flagship, the mothership of the Miyajima Ferries fleet. Captains who sailed her often said she had a mind of her own, that she glided smoother on stormy seas than any vessel built after her. Her engine growl became a familiar lullaby to islanders. Tourists came and went, cameras snapping as she passed the iconic floating torii gate—but it was the locals who understood her best.
She transported schoolchildren on field trips, monks returning from mainland temples, crates of fresh oysters, and countless pilgrims visiting the revered Itsukushima Shrine. She was there through typhoons and celebrations, fireworks festivals and quiet autumn mornings.
Precious Ferry witnessed generations grow. Many recalled their first kiss aboard her deck, wedding proposals made under a moonlit crossing, or final goodbyes whispered into the sea breeze. For the people of Hiroshima Prefecture, she was less a machine and more a silent guardian—constant, comforting.
In the early 2000s, as faster and more modern ferries joined the Miyajima fleet, some expected her to fade into the background. But she never did. Even as her paint began to fade and her seats creaked with age, passengers still chose her. "Old is gold," they would say, patting her rails like an old friend.
In the autumn of 2017, after 37 years of steadfast service, the announcement came. Precious Ferry was to be retired. The news hit the community like a wave. On her final run, hundreds gathered at the dock—some with flowers, some with songs, all with memories. Schoolchildren waved handmade flags, elders wept quietly, and ferry staff stood at attention, saluting the ferry that had defined an era.
Her engines hummed one last time across the Miyajima Strait as she sailed a ceremonial route, passing the torii gate with a graceful bow as if saying goodbye to an old friend.
But her journey was far from over.
Later that year, Sawyer Ferries Inc., a small but ambitious company operating in the Sawyer Isles, a remote archipelago known for its rugged cliffs and poetic sunsets, purchased the vessel. To many, it seemed odd—a storied Japanese ferry crossing oceans to serve elsewhere. But to Sawyer Ferries, this was a treasure.
The ferry underwent a respectful restoration—new engines, interior refurbishments, and a repaint in deep emerald and cream to match the Sawyer Isles’ coastal hues. But her name remained: Precious Ferry. The locals of the isles, many of whom had never heard of Miyajima, quickly came to love her in their own way. She became the flagship of their fleet now, sailing between misty islands and remote communities, carrying fishermen, schoolchildren, and tourists enchanted by her aura.
But if you listen closely—on a foggy morning or under starlit skies—she still hums the melody of Miyajima, a memory deep in her keel. Her nameplate still bears a small engraved torii, a quiet homage to her first home.
To this day, Precious Ferry sails on, now aged but proud, proving that ships—like people—can have second lives, new purposes, and legacies that transcend oceans. In Miyajima, her absence is still felt. But they say sometimes, when the wind is right, the waves carry whispers from across the sea.
