History:
Diesel locomotives, which use diesel engines to generate electricity for traction motors, became a significant force in rail transportation, gradually replacing steam locomotives. While the diesel engine was invented in the late 19th century, it wasn't until the 1920s that they were seriously considered for locomotives. Early models were primarily used for switching and passenger service, but by the 1940s, advancements in design and power output allowed them to take on heavy freight duties as well.
