150 Class 0-4-0ST
The SRFB's expansion to the numerous ports across the Sawyer Isles required capable shunters to organise the yards. While the design for the 150s was initially planned by the GSIR, their development continued under the SRFB which allowed some modifications to be made, notably an increase in boiler pressure from 145psi to 160psi. These 'dock-tanks' performed very well in service with their sufficient pulling power and short wheelbase. By 1925, 7 150s had been constructed and were eventually put on short coal and fish trains. However, crews often complained about the cramped cab space and rough riding, problems that were alleviated with the entrance of 220s and diesel shunters. Withdrawals began in 1946 but a healthy numbe
r of them remain preserved. This build represents one of the modified 150s: 154 'Cyclops' which is preserved and currently on display at the North Harbour.
