Dutch 1950 Navy Ship Castor
This is a Dutch 1950 Navy ship named Castor.
STORY
After WW2 the Dutch needed new ship to defend themselves if it would happen again, so they made a basic ship and put 3 guns on it.
- 1 3″/76 mm cannon on its foredeck
- 2 20mm Oerlikon machine guns on the back of the ship
Its first use was as a "Loodsboot" (a station on sea for rest / kind of an hotel).
It was used from 1950 - 1980 in Delfzijl it always was 2 weeks close by the Wester-Eems bouy to then be redeemed by its sister ship it was also used as a bunker boat to give food and drinkwater to lightships and for training for the royal navy
In 1949 NAVO was founded so the Netherlands was forced to build alot of warships.
That is why the Castor was designed for a dual role.
Firstly, that of Communication Vessel, for accompanying the convoys on the Atlantic Routes. The high masts and extensive rigging certainly dressed the ship nicely. But all the stays and cables were actually antennas. Then a second role as Outpost Boat – a heavily armed object that at sea everything that passed or flew over.
