CSS Virginia was the first steam-powered ironclad warship built by the Confederate States Navy during the first year of the American Civil War.
The CSS Virginia was initially the USS Merrimack before being sunk on April 20, 1861, by Union forces to prevent its capture by the Confederacy. It was decided, after the ports capture by the Confederacy, that she should be converted to an ironclad as she was the only reletively undamaged, large ship that was left in the shipyard.
