**Sinking in 2007:**
In 2007 on a exploration cruise to the Arctic circle the ship encountered an ice patch in the water and began moving through it. The vessel became stuck in the ice, the captain proceeded to reverse the vessel then ram into the ice again. this time leading to a large gash in the side of the Explorer. 16 hours later the Explorer would be making her way to the bottom of the ocean. There were no casualties in this incident and all crew and guests made it safely back home after a lengthy rescue by the MV National Geographic.
