VL Pyorremyrsky - Finnish Prototype Fighter
[hr]
Description & Background
Replica of the VL Pyörremyrsky ("Hurricane"), a Finnish prototype fighter designed by Torsti Verkkola at the State Aircraft Factory (Valtion lentokonetehdas). Only one aircraft was ever built, having made approximately 34 test flights between November 1945 and July 1947.
The plane was given the nickname Puu-Mersu (Wooden Messerschmitt) though the plane was an independent design. The use of wood in the construction was due to a scarcity of metals. The goal was to create a fighter with similar flight qualities to the Messerschmiit Bf 109G, also having been equipped with the same propeller and engine.
The aircraft was still in the prototype stage when the war ended, meaning funds allocated for the project decreased. The project was terminated as little funds were available for the purchase of new aircraft for the Finnish Air Force.
