Hitachi Class 800 BMU High Speed Train Coach D
The British Rail Class 800 is a modern high-speed train built by Hitachi as part of the UK government's Intercity Express Programme (IEP). Designed to replace aging fleets like the iconic InterCity 125 (Class 43) and InterCity 225, the Class 800 represents a new generation of faster, cleaner, and more efficient rail travel in Britain.
The first Class 800 trains entered service in 2017. They were designed as bi-mode multiple units, meaning they can run on both electric power from overhead lines and diesel engines when needed. This makes them especially flexible, as they can serve both electrified and non-electrified routes without needing to change locomotives. The trains are powered by modern diesel engines built by MTU and can switch between power sources while moving.
Built at Hitachi’s plant in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, the Class 800 trains were developed in partnership with the UK Department for Transport and train operating companies like Great Western Railway (GWR) and London North Eastern Railway (LNER). They are part of the wider AT300 family, which also includes the similar Class 801 and Class 802.
With a top speed of 125 miles per hour, the Class 800 matches the speed of the older HSTs but does so with greater fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and better reliability. The passenger experience has also been upgraded, with modern interiors, more seats, better accessibility, power sockets, and Wi-Fi onboard.
The introduction of the Class 800 marked a significant investment in the future of Britain's railways. These trains helped reduce journey times on key routes such as London to Bristol, Cardiff, and Edinburgh, while also improving environmental performance. Their ability to operate under electric and diesel power gives them a strategic advantage on parts of the UK rail network that are only partially electrified.
While the Class 800 may not yet carry the same nostalgic status as the HST, it is undeniably an important step in the evolution of British intercity travel. As the rail industry continues to move toward electrification and sustainability, the Class 800 has become a symbol of the transition modern, adaptable, and built for the future.
