History
Mariefred was built by Motala Verkstad and launched on 5 June 1903, being delivered to her owners shortly afterward. She was based at the port of Stockholm and upon her completion, used mainly to carry passengers between the capital and Mariefred on scheduled services. However, she was also employed on charter sailings, local excursions, cargo transport and seasonal tourist trips. She was present at several notable regional events during her early career as one of Lake Mälaren’s principal steamers.
From early 1916 until later that year, Mariefred received machinery upgrades and underwent a general overhaul. After this work was completed, she was photographed alongside other Mälaren steamers in a well‑known image taken during a fleet gathering, before running trials for several days and then returning to regular service on her route.
From 1903 to the mid‑20th century, Mariefred served in regular traffic. On 27 July 1931, she grounded near Taxinge during poor visibility; she was refloated without loss of life and repaired shortly afterward. In the late 1940s a fire broke out in her galley, and she was beached and later restored at Stockholm. She was then withdrawn from her original company in the 1960s and sold to the preservation group Ångfartyget Mariefreds Vänner. Now restored, she resumed her usual duties and was present at the reopening of several heritage piers during the 1970s. She was based at Stockholm from this period onward, and was used as an excursion steamer. She remains preserved today as a historic vessel and continues to sail on Lake Mälaren.
