HISTORY / LORE
Built in 1953 by the Mitsubishi Kobe Shipyards of Kobe, Japan. She was originally built for Japanese owners, but sometime in the 1960s, she was sold to the Thaddeus Co. of Volos, Greece, and renamed "Homer"; her first name was unknown. Her first owners had really pushed the ship hard, though they kept her in, not great condition, but good condition regardless. Thaddeus Co., on the other hand, routinely put off key repairs and only did what was absolutely necessary to keep the freighter afloat.
On October 19th, 1978, the Homer left Volos, Greece, for Hurghada, captained by T L Salsofraal. Egypt with a load of fish. On the 21st, the ship exited the Mediterranean into the Suez Canal, where she then entered the Red Sea. On the 22nd of October, 1978, whilst battling a gale and her port of call was visible through Binoculars, the ship sprang 3 separate leaks in her cargo hold. Her pumps were not enough to keep the water out, and at 00:22, the ship sent out a Mayday, and at 00:25, another message was sent out that they were abandoning ship. Because of how close they were to Hurghada on top of the fact that it was only around 50 Degrees F (10 Degrees C), all 6 crew members managed to row the lifeboat to Hurghada. Arriving completely soaked and without their ship or cargo, but alive, and no man died in her sinking.
