Lore
The Duplex Drive (DD) Sherman was a British innovation for amphibious assaults, using a collapsible canvas screen and twin propellers to “swim” tanks from landing craft to shore. Converted from M4A1, M4A2, and M4A4 models, they could make 4–5 mph in calm water and were intended to land ahead of infantry on D-Day.
About 294 were deployed, but rough seas sank nearly half before reaching the beaches. Survivors proved invaluable, suppressing German defenses and aiding infantry. Though fragile and risky, DD Shermans gave the Allies a surprise armored presence during amphibious operations and continued to see use in later campaigns.
