Class 220 Voyager DMU Coach A

The Class 220 “Voyager” is a family of high-speed diesel-electric multiple units introduced to the UK network in 2001. Built by Bombardier Transportation at their Bruges works, these trains were commissioned to replace aging loco-hauled stock on long-distance routes, offering faster acceleration, reduced journey times, and greater passenger comfort. Each set is formed of four coaches, all powered by underfloor diesel engines driving electric traction motors, giving the train strong performance on both mainline and cross-country services. With a maximum speed of 125 mph (200 km/h), the Voyager quickly became a familiar sight on Britain’s railways, particularly on services linking the South Coast, Midlands, North of England, and Scotland. Although the Class 220 lacks the tilting mechanism fitted to its Class 221 cousin, it shares the same streamlined design and advanced safety systems, making it a reliable workhorse across diverse routes. Over two decades later, the Voyager fleet remains a cornerstone of intercity travel, remembered as one of the first modern DMUs to bring airline-style comfort and efficiency to UK passengers.
