Your running out of fuel after a long battle, which took out most of your ship. Your small shuttle wont last very long in these dire circumstances, and you'll need to make landfall soon if you ever have any hope of taking off again.
Just before you land, you find a orbital relay with valuable gravite panels. You could use these to expand your shuttle and take back to the skies, or sell them and settle down on land.
Your old life is behind you, and the choice is yours.
