After she was built, the Crane was delivered to her owners in Virginia and served an 11-year career fishing off the eastern seaboard. However, on the night of November 11th, 1951, the Crane, whilst battling a windstorm around 30 miles off the coast of Delaware, foundered in the Atlantic after springing leaks in her General Storage and her fish hold. A mayday was sent; however, when the coast guard arrived at the wrecksite, 3 of her 6 crew had perished. Unlike the 3 survivors, these men, including the Captain and both Engineers, didn't make it out of the frigid water and into either the ship's lifeboat or any of the 4 Carley floats. Both Deckhands and the Mate survived. Crane was also 1 of 7 of the Bird Class Trawlers to be lost. The other 6 were the Pelican, and the Gall that were lost in 1942 and 1944 due to torpedo attacks, the Gull which was sunk due to a mine also in 1944, the Kingfisher which went missing after leaving Chester for the fishing grounds and was presumed lost in a storm like the Crane, and the Penguin which was converted to a coastal cargo ship and sold to German owners. In 1956, the Penguin, now renamed the Anna, went missing off the coast of Denmark and was presumed lost with all hands. The wreck of the Crane was discovered in 1990 whilst researchers were looking for a different wreck. She is lying on her side in a sorry state, her wooden hull, along with her smokestack, is all that remains, whilst her pilot house and masts were either ripped off or have rotted.
