👷♂️ Operational Role
About the N&W GP30 High Hood #555
High hood GP30s were primarily used for general freight hauling, including pulling extensive freight trains across various terrains and routes. The high short hood design allowed space for optional equipment like steam generators, which could enable use in passenger service on some railroads (a factory option from EMD during the 1950s–1960s era), though this was less common for the GP30 compared to dedicated passenger locomotives. Many of these units remained in service for decades, often rebuilt with upgraded components (e.g., to GP30u or GP30M standards) for continued freight duties on railroads like BNSF, Reading Blue Mountain and Northern, and others into the 1990s and beyond.
