StarJack Vanilla race rework ][ xenotype redalga
I'm editing every vanilla xenotype. Lore accurately, in my opinion. Seems balanced and much more fun.
Starjacks are supposed to be a cheap resource to maintain stellar ships.
That's why, this xenotype is supposed to be inheritable.
Also their body is so different from baseliners that it's impossible to imagine it being changed in one lifetime.
And also, why? "Hey let me turn one of those white dudes real quick so I can escape my damned planet on that ship of yours". This might be a realistic scenario, but I still believe they should be born like this, not created.
Now let's talk about genes.
I've removed only 3 of their original genes:
Great construction - it's knowledge which is not supposed to be genetic and there is no way it forces passion on top.
Changed to "strong construction"
Awful mining - yes they are supposed to be weaker, but they aren't dystrophic. Also they can just use tools for mining, don't you think? (V 1.1: changed to poor mining)
Awful plants (V 1.1: Tynan removed it himself) - their whole gimmick is resilient skin. That's the only thing that might matter in plant work. Therefore it's now changed to "strong plants"
Now about my additions : )
Weak immunity - it's supposed to be weak. They are born to live in sterile environments. Also their "supper clotting" which gives around 20-70% tend quality will ensure they get infections even in late game... :)
Super clotting &
Fire resistant - It's about their skin, just like vacuum, cold and heat resistance. Starjacks are supposed to be of use when everything else fails.
There are lots of very hot places on the ships that might need repairs. They might be sent to places where they could get stuck and bleed out.
Their skin is their suit. And they are supposed to be able to rely on it.
Psychically deaf - and again, when all else fails, starjacks must be of use. The ship might be attached with psychic energy, suppressing everything and everyone on board. Also there could be a psychic radiance in the broken ship sections.
Unattractive - Facial ridges, no hair, wrong to the touch skin... Low wage/slave status, it's all about being unattractive.
Beardless - Starjacks are supposed to survive with only a halmat of a space suit. In reality, they must never have beards because it can interfere with their ability to put the helmet on. That's exactly the rule that pilots of the planes follow, and some other folks.
Also again, their skin is different to baseliners. I would expect it to not have hair follicles at all.
Standard body - equal body means equal size of suits for all. Equal size of repair hatches. It's all about their slave type worker status. All about productivity.
Nearsighted - science shows that human eyes will change really significantly after a long time in space. It's safe to expect that vision will shift towards a better near-vision. But the change will most likely sacrifice long range vision because it wouldn't be used.
Strong cooking &
Strong medical - it's just a small offset (+4), I explain it with their skin again. They are supposed to be much more sterile than ordinary humans. It would help with a cleaner cooking and medical aid. For the record, my Yttakins will have an opposite offset because of their fur.
Awful artistic - their slave type worker status again. They are supposed to not question their job and purpose.
Poor social - another consequence of being unattractive.
And now,
Foam spray - it's said that vacuum resistance is based on some kind of liquid generated by the body. Let's say it's the same substance here.
Also, this gene just exists. I think it's fair to give it to somebody, don't you think?
(V1.1) Wake-up resistant - For overtime
Compatible with everything except anything that touches Starjack def.
[b]V2.0[/b] This mod is a PATCH now so it's compatible with everything. Error-wise.
