HISTORY
Built in Thunder Bay, Canada, in 1898, the SS Lake Ontario was one of the earliest passenger ferries to operate exclusively on the Great Lakes. Designed for reliability and comfort, she served routes on the great lakes, carrying passengers, and light cargo across the often unpredictable inland seas.
Throughout her long career, the Lake Ontario became a familiar sight to lake-shore towns, known for her distinctive black-white-and-red funnel and elegant white superstructure. She remained in service well into the 1930s before the vessel vanished without a trace. No wreckage or survivors were ever found, and her disappearance remains one of the Great Lakes’ enduring maritime mysteries.
