MS Finn Majesty
MS Finn Majesty is a Finnish passenger ferry owned and operated by Finnish Ferries. She was built in 1985 and has operated around the Baltic Sea, connecting Finland, the Åland Islands, and Sweden. Finn Majesty has experienced several refits throughout her career due to alterations in passenger standards and competition along the Nordic ferry routes. Her homeport is Mariehamn, located on the Åland Islands.
History
MS Finn Majesty was built in 1985 for Finnish Ferries to run the busy Helsinki–Mariehamn–Stockholm service. On introduction, she was the company's most modern ferry, featuring comfortable overnight accommodation and a wide variety of onboard facilities.
She operated this route until 1992, when newer, larger ferries were introduced and replaced her on the important Finland–Sweden route. In 1990, her sister ship Finn Maiden (built in 1981) was sold to a Swedish company and rechristened Jan-Erik, ending the pair’s simultaneous operation on the Helsinki–Mariehamn–Stockholm line.
During her original period on the Helsinki–Stockholm service, Finn Majesty experienced a car deck fire, in which a truck and a nearby car were destroyed following an engine malfunction. The incident was quickly contained, limiting damage to the two vehicles and minor surrounding smoke effects.
After being withdrawn from the Helsinki–Mariehamn–Stockholm route in 1992, Finn Majesty was transferred to the Turku–Stockholm route. In 1997 she was joined on the route by her formar linemate Finn Harmony. During her time on this service, she suffered a starboard engine fire, which brought under control by the ship’s automated suppression systems and engineering crew. She later experienced a brief blackout while maneuvering into port, which caused a minor collision with the dock and light hull damage.
In 2003, the vessel underwent an extensive renovation that included interior refitting and cabin reconfiguration. Several family cabins were rebuilt as double cabins, reducing her passenger capacity from 422 to 402. After completion of the refit, Finn Majesty returned to the Turku–Mariehamn–Stockholm route, where she continues to operate for Finnish Ferries.
Incidents
Throughout her long career, MS Finn Majesty has had several notable incidents.
Car deck fire:
In the late 1990s, a fire broke out on the car deck when a truck’s engine malfunctioned during loading operations. The flames spread to an adjacent car before crew and fire-suppression systems brought the situation under control. The truck and car were destroyed, but the ferry sustained only minor smoke damage.
Starboard engine fire:
While operating on the Helsinki–Tallinn route, Finn Majesty experienced a fire in her starboard main engine. Automatic suppression systems activated promptly, and the engineering crew extinguished the fire without requiring passenger evacuation. Temporary repairs allowed her to return to regular service shortly afterward.
Blackout and docking collision:
In the early 2010s, the vessel suffered a brief electrical blackout while maneuvering into port. With propulsion lost momentarily, she made light contact with the dock, resulting in minor hull and fender damage. The ship resumed normal operations later the same day after system checks.
These incidents resulted in safety reviews, equipment upgrades, and refinements to operational procedures, contributing to the vessel’s continued reliability despite her age.
Design and development
Finn Majesty was designed as a more modern and improved successor to her older sister ship, Finn Maiden (1981). While the two vessels share a similar overall shape and size, Finn Majesty incorporated several advancements in both design and amenities.
Key developments over Finn Maiden include:
A two-deck nightclub in the stern (replacing the one-deck nightclub on Finn Maiden)
Covered bridge wings
One larger funnel instead of two smaller flank-mounted funnels
Improved interior spaces, including redesigned cabins and public areas
Updated navigation and propulsion control systems for better reliability and economy
These improvements made Finn Majesty a more comfortable, efficient, and visually modern vessel, setting a new design standard for future ships in the Finnish Ferries fleet.
Facilities
The main passenger deck features a buffet restaurant in the bow with ocean views. Amidships is an à la carte restaurant serving Finnish and Nordic cuisine. The stern houses the ship’s two-story nightclub, one of her most distinctive design elements.
Passenger cabins are located on Decks 5 and 7, offering both standard and premium accommodations. The upper level of the nightclub occupies the aft portion of Deck 7, providing seating overlooking the dance floor and stage below.
The car deck is situated beneath the passenger decks.
Current status
As of 2025, MS Finn Majesty remains in active service with Finnish Ferries on the Helsinki–Mariehamn–Stockholm route. She operates alongside her newer fleetmate, MS Finn Opera (Built 1992). Despite her age, Finn Majesty remains popular with travelers seeking a smaller, more traditional Baltic ferry experience.

The engine switches are in the back of the bridge, to get the engines started increase the throttle by a bit.
Do not put pitch to 100 before the engines have started.
Once the engines have started you can slowly start increasing the pitch
To get moving put the pitch to 25 or above
