Beginning her Southampton–Halifax–New York route in 1899, she astonished the industry by capturing the Blue Riband for the fastest westbound crossing, a title she held until Cunard’s Lusitania and later Mauretania surpassed her in 1907. Small but remarkably swift at over 23 knots, she became a respected passenger carrier before being requisitioned in 1915 for brief naval service as a Canadian troop transport. Returned to civilian duty the next year, she continued crossings until August 9th, 1917, when an enemy torpedo struck Boiler Room No. 2 and the engine room in the English Channel. The Crown of Scotland foundered quickly; her wreck remains undiscovered, though 34 of the 59 aboard survived.
